Origami Rabbit

Now it's time for mischievous rabbit to appear, ready to eat cabbages in the field and run about the garden. The way this model is made is a recreation of a traditional origami model from Japan. If you put a finger in the upper part of the finished mask and open it out, it is transformed into a candy box with a rabbit’s face.

YOU WILL NEED:

1 sheet of 6in (15cm) square paper

1. Make two creases across the middle of the paper, opening out again each time, then turn over the paper and make a single crease from corner to corner across the design.

2. Fold in the side points toward each other, at the same time bringing the top point down to the bottom of the object to create a diamond shape.

3. Fold the top flap forward, making a crease across the whole width of the paper.

4. Lift up the object and tuck the bottom flap in underneath, again making a crease across the width of the paper. Put the paper back on the table and press the creases in place.

5. Lift the top flap on the left-hand side and turn it over to the right, then fold in the remaining flap on the left so that its top edge runs down the object’s central crease. Take the flap you just turned to the right and fold it in so that its edge also runs down the central crease.

6. Turn the flap you just folded back to the right and then repeat the whole process on the right-hand side of the object, folding in both flaps carefully to meet inside.

7. Turn over the rabbit’s ears so that the inner edges touch the corners above the eyes, making folds that run down inside the head.

8. Lift up the object and open out the rabbit’s ears by putting a finger inside the ear and twisting the front and back around, then flattening it to make a new crease. Repeat on the other side and press down the small triangles that will have appeared just above the eyes.
