Crocheted Rainbow Baby Blanket

baby blanket crochet

This scrap yarn project echoes the thrifty quilts made by joining narrow strips of fabric. Just collect a rainbow of colours, work them in simple striped strips then join the strips to make a blanket.

SIZE

64 x 89cm (251⁄4 x 35in)

YOU WILL NEED

Approximately:

60g pure wool or wool-mix DK yarn in shades of red (A)

TENSION

21 sts measure 12cm (43⁄4in) and 12 rows

measure 11cm (41⁄4in) over striped patt, using 4.00mm (US F/5) hook. Change hook size, if necessary, to obtain this tension.

ABBREVIATIONS

ch = chain; cont = continue; dc = double crochet; htr = half treble; rep = repeat; RS = right side; sp(s) = space(s); ss = slip stitch; st(s) = stitch(es); tr = treble; WS = wrong side; [ ] = work instructions in square brackets as directed.

NOTES

  • All yarn amounts are approximate as different brands of yarn vary in length according to the fibre content.
  • Use as many shades of each colour as you can find. If possible, work each row of each 6-row stripe in a different shade, you’ll need just 11⁄2 metres (12⁄3 yards) for a dc row and 3 metres (31⁄3 yards) for a treble row.
  • Work over the ends, leaving any excess yarn on the back of the work to trim off later.
  • You’ll need almost 50g of one shade of blue for the shell edging.

Striped Strip

Using a shade of A, make 22ch.

1st row (WS): 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, [1dc in each ch] to end. 21 sts.

Change to 2nd shade of A.

2nd row: 1dc in first dc, 2ch, [1tr in each dc] to end.

Change to 3rd shade of A.

3rd row: 1ch, [1dc in each tr] to last st, 1dc in 2nd ch.

2nd and 3rd rows form the patt.

Changing shades for each row, work 3 more rows A and 6 rows in each of B, C, D, E and F. Starting again with A, cont in 6-row stripes until 85 rows in patt have been completed, so ending with a dc row. Varying the shades within the stripes, make 3 more striped strips.
