Crochet Child's Beanie

crochet Mrs Moon yarn

This gorgeous child's beanie crochet pattern is taken from the new book, Simple Chic Crochet, by Susan Ritchie and Karen Miller of Mrs Moon. We love the colourful pom pom on the top and matching trimming!

Child's mulitcolour crochet beanie with pompom

This lovely child’s hat is a great, easy project suitable for a beginner, and creates a lovely gift very, very quickly! The beanie is exactly what you want from a child’s hat – simple, fun, warm and easy to spot in a crowd!

The yarn is two colours held together; this gives a lovely marl effect where the colours randomly twist around each other. You do not need to wind the two colours into one ball before using the yarn, simply hold one strand from each separate ball at the same time.

HAT

Using A and B together, ch4, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch2 (counts as 1 htr), work 9htr into the ring, join with a sl st to top of ch 2, do not turn. (10 sts)

Round 2: Ch2 (counts as 1 htr), 1htr into same st (at base of ch 2), 2htr into next st (this is quite diffi cult to see as it looks very close to the ch 2), 2htr into each st to end of rnd, join with a sl st to top of ch 2, do not turn. (20 sts)

Round 3: Ch2 (counts as 1 htr), 1htr into same st, 1htr into next st, *2htr into foll st, 1htr into next st; rep from * to end of rnd, finishing with 1htr in last st, join with a sl st to top of ch 2, do not turn. (30 sts)

Round 4: Ch2 (counts as 1 htr) 1htr into same st, *1htr into each of next two sts, 2htr into foll st; rep from * to end of rnd, finishing with 1htr into each of last 2 sts, join with a sl st to top of ch 2, do not turn. (40 sts)

Round 5: Ch2 (counts as 1 htr), 1htr into foll st and into every st to end of rnd, join with a sl st to top of ch 2, do not turn. (40 sts)

Rounds 6–13: Rep rnd 5. You can make the hat larger or smaller here, just keep trying it on for size.

Fasten off A and B and join in 2 strands of C (take one from the centre of the ball and one from the outside) at the back of the hat.

Round 14 (trim): Ch1, 1dc into same place, 1 dc into every st to end of rnd, join with a sl st to fi rst dc made, fasten off.

TO MAKE UP

Weave in ends.

POMPOM

Make a fabulous pompom using C. Keep ends quite long after you have tied it and use these to attach the pompom to the hat.

Colours

If you do not want to do a contrast pompom and trim, you should have enough of the main colours to just use these instead.
