Crocheted Mr. Pumpkin head from Super Scary Halloween Crochet is the perfect weekend project for Halloween.

Super Scary Halloween Crochet

MATERIALS

Pure wool light worsted (DK) yarn:

Head: 1 x 1.oz (50g) ball—approx 124yd (112.5m)—of orange (A)

Stalk, Scarf: Small amount of green (B)

Boots: Small amount of gray (C)

Pants: 1⁄4 x 1.oz (50g) ball—approx 31yd (28.5m)—of blue (D)

Body, Arms: 1⁄4 x 1.oz (50g) ball—approx. 31yd (28.5m)—of brown (E)

Sweater: 1⁄2 x 1.oz (50g) ball—approx 62yd (56.5m)—of gold (F)

Fiberfill stuffing

Face details: Small pieces black felt

Crochet hook size: D/3 (3.25mm)

HEAD

Head is worked in rows, not rounds. Work all sts in back loops only. Using A, make 16ch (foundation chain).

Row 1: 1sc in second ch from hook, 1sc in each of next 2 ch, 1hdc in each of next 9 ch, 1sc in each of last 3 ch, turn. (15 sts)

Row 2: 1ch, 1sc in each of next 5 sts, 1hdc in each of next 5 sts, 1sc in each of last 5 sts. (15 sts)

Row 3: 1ch, 1sc in each of next 3 sts, 1hdc in each of next 9 sts, 1sc in each of last 3 sts. (15 sts)

Rows 4–25: Rep Rows 2 and 3 eleven times more. (15 sts)

Row 26: Rep Row 2 once more. (15 sts)

Do not fasten off.

Take hook out of work and fold rectangle in half so foundation chain meets Row 26 (two short sides together). Place hook back into loop and ss through both sides and in each stitch to join seam and form a tube. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Turn inside out.

Base: Thread tapestry needle with long tail. Make small running sts around one open edge to form bottom of head. Pull sts tog, secure yarn tightly to keep end closed. Do not fasten off and keep yarn tail and needle on outside of pumpkin. Stuff head.

Top: Pass threaded needle up from base of head, through center of stuffing to opening. Make a running st around sts of top opening. Pull sts tog, secure end tightly to keep top closed and sew end in securely.

STALK

Using B, make 2ch, 6sc in second ch from hook.

Rounds 1–6: 1sc in each st. (6 sts)

Round 7: *1sc in next st, 2ch, 1sc in same st; rep from * four times more, 1sc in next st, 2ch, ss in same st.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn end.

BOOTS, LEGS & BODY

Right boot & leg: Using C, make 6ch.

Round 1: 2sc in second ch from hook. 1sc in each of next 3ch, 3sc in last ch. Working on other side of chain, 1sc in each of next 3ch, 2sc in last ch. (14 sts) Cont working in back of loops only.

Round 2: 1sc in each st. (14 sts)

Round 3: 1sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog twice, 1sc in last 6 sts. (12 sts)

Round 4: 1sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc in last 4 sts. (10 sts)

Round 5: 1sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc in last 3 sts. (8 sts) Begin working in both loops.

Rounds 6–9: 1sc in each st. (8 sts) Change to D and begin working in back loops.

Round 10: 1sc in each st. (8 sts)

Round 11: [1sc in each of next 2 sts, 2sc in next st] twice, 1sc in each of last 2 sts. (10 sts) Begin working in both loops.

Rounds 12–16: 1sc in each st. (10 sts)

Fasten off.

 

Boot cuff: Reattach C at top back of boot into front loop of Round 9. 3ch, *1dc in each front loop around, ss into third of first 3-ch. Fasten off and sew in end.

 

Left boot & leg: Rep first boot and leg. Do not fasten off before stuffing. Make boot cuff as first leg. Stuff legs and pin together with long quilting pins, so that both feet are facing in the same direction.

 

Body: Using D, make 1sc in each of next 5 sts around second leg. Mark beg of round into first st with st marker.

Round 1: Insert hook into middle st at back of leg. Join legs together by making 1sc in each of next 10 sts of first leg, 1sc into each of next 5 sts of second leg. (20 sts)

Rounds 2–4: 1sc in each st. (20 sts) Change to E.

Rounds 5–12: 1sc in each st

Round 13: *1sc in next st, sc2tog; rep from * to last 2 sts, 1sc in each st. (14 sts)

Round 14: Rep Row 13. (10 sts) Stuff body.

Round 15: Sc2tog around until opening is closed. Fasten off.

 

ARMS (make 2) Using E, make 2ch, 5sc in second ch from hook.

Round 1: *1sc in next st, 2sc in next st; rep from * once, 1sc in last st. (7 sts)

Round 2: 1sc in each st. (7 sts) Rep Round 2 until arm measures approx. 3in (8cm). Fasten off.

Tip: Do not overstuff arms or they will not fit into the sweater.

 

MAKING UP

Pin and sew stalk to top of head, using long yarn end. Cut out pieces of felt using the eye, nose, and mouth templates and hand sew to pumpkin face. Stuff arms very lightly, pin and sew to body.

 

SWEATER

Using F, make 26ch, ss into first ch to form a ring.

Rounds 1–7: 1sc in each st. (26 sts)

Round 8: Sc2tog, 1sc in each of next 12 sts, sc2tog, 1sc in each st to end of round. (24 sts)

Round 9: Sc2tog, 1sc in each of next 11 sts, sc2tog, 1sc in each st to end of round. (22 sts)

Round 10: 1sc in each st. (22 sts)

Fasten off.

 

First shoulder:

With fasten-off st facing to your right, join yarn into third st in towards center.

Row 1: 1sc in each of next 3 sts. (3 sts)

Row 2: 1sc in each of next 2 sts. (2 sts)

Row 3: Sc2tog. (1 st)

Row 4: 2ch, 2sc in second ch from hook. (2 sts)

Row 5: 1sc in each of next 2 sts. (2 sts)

Row 6: 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st. (3 sts) Do not fasten off.

 

Sleeve: 1ch, work 10sc around straight armhole edge, ss in first sc to form a ring. Place st marker.

Rounds 1–8: 1sc in each st. (10 sts)

Round 9: 2sc in first st, 1sc in each of next 4 sts, 2sc in next st, 1sc in each of last 4 sts. (12 sts)

Round 10: 2sc in first st, 1sc in each of next 5 sts, 2sc in next st, 1sc in each of last 5 sts. (14 sts)

Round 11: 2sc in first st, 1sc in each of next 6 sts, 2sc in next st, 1sc in each of last 6 sts. (16 sts)

Rounds 12–15: 1sc in each st. (16 sts) Fasten off.

 

Second shoulder & sleeve: With fasten-off st facing to your right, skip 1 st and join in F.

Next row: Ss in each st. (3 sts) Rep first shoulder and sleeve from Row 1, working first 3 sts towards center.

 

SCARF

Using B, make 45ch, 1hdc in third ch from hook, 1hdc in each ch to end. (43 sts)

Row 1: 2ch, 1hdc in each st to end. (43 sts) Fasten off. Attach scarf to Mr Pumpkin Head’s neck.
