Apple Bonnet

A sweet and charming pixie bonnet with the playful addition of a stalk and leaf to the top. It’s worked from the top down with a decorative garter stitch border that runs down the sides and finishes in garter stitch ties to keep this cozy bonnet in place.

 

Yarn and materials

Scheepjes Terrazzo (70% recycled wool, 30% viscose) light worsted (DK) weight;

191yd (175m) per 1¾ oz (50g) ball

Scarlatto 718: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) ball

Approx. 25in (64cm) each of brown and green yarn

Needles and equipment

US 6 (4mm) circular needle

US 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs)

US 3 (3.25mm) needles

1 round marker

4 stitch markers

Tapestry needle

Sizes

0–3m (3–6m, 6–12m, 1–2yr, 2–3yr)

Gauge (tension)

22 sts and 40 rows = 4in (10cm) square over garter stitch in the round, using US 6 (4mm) needles.

Bonnet

Using US 6 (4mm) circular needle, cast on 8 sts using long tail method. Join for working in round, being careful not to twist sts. PM at beg of round.

Note: It may be easier to begin using double-pointed needles, switching to circular needle once more stitches have been increased across the needles.

Work in garter st in the round (alt k and p rounds).

Round 1: [K3, kfb] twice. (2 sts inc, 10 sts)

Round 2: P to end.

Round 3: [K3, kfb, kfb] twice. (4 sts inc, 14 sts)

Round 4: P to end.

Round 5: K3, kfb, k2, kfb, PM, k3, kfb, k2, kfb. (4 sts inc, 18 sts)

Round 6: P to end, SM.

Round 7: [K3, kfb, k to last st before marker, kfb, SM] twice. (4 sts inc, 22 sts)

Round 8: P to end, SM.

Rep Rounds 7 and 8 a further 18 (22, 25, 26, 29) times. (94 (110, 122, 126, 138) sts)

Shape back as foll:

Round 1: K3, kfb, k to last st before marker, kfb, SM, k3, kfb, k18 (21, 24, 25,

26) sts, ssk, PM, k4, PM, k2tog, k18 (21, 24, 25, 26) sts, kfb. (2 sts inc, 96 (112,

124, 128, 140) sts)

Round 2: P to end, SM.

Round 3: [K3, kfb, k to last st before marker, kfb, SM, kfb, k to 2 sts before marker, ssk, SM, k4, SM, k2tog, k to last st, kfb. (2 sts inc, 98 (114, 126, 130,

142) sts)

Round 4: P to end, SM.

Rep Rounds 3 and 4 a further 5 (5, 6, 6, 6) times. (108 (124, 138, 142, 154) sts)

Bind (cast) off all sts purlwise, removing markers.

 

GARTER STITCH TIES

Using US 6 (4mm) DPNs, pick up and k5 sts at first bonnet corner along (kfb, k3, kfb) section of patt.

Row 1: K to last st, wyif sl1p.

Rep Row 1 until work measures 30cm (12in).

Bind (cast) off all sts.

Rep on second corner.

 

Apple stalk

Using US 6 (4mm) DPNs and 20in (50cm) length of brown yarn, with RS facing pick up and k5 sts at center top of bonnet.

Row 1: Do not turn work, slide sts to other end of needle, bring working yarn back to beg of work and pull slightly, k to end.

Rep Row 1 a further five times.

Break yarn and thread through 5 sts to fasten off.

 

Leaf

Using US 3 (3.25mm) needles and 25in (64cm) length of green yarn, cast on 3 sts using long tail method.

Row 1: K1, yo, k1, yo, k1. (2 sts inc, 5 sts)

Row 2: K to end (k into back of yo sts).

Row 3: K to end.

Row 4: K2, yo, k1, yo, k2. (2 sts inc, 7 sts)

Row 5: K to end.

Row 6: K to end.

Row 7: Ssk, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.

(2 sts dec, 5 sts rem)

Row 8: K to end.

Row 9: Ssk, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.

(2 sts dec, 3 sts rem)

Row 10: K to end.

Row 11: Ssk, pass k st over to bind (cast) off.

 

Finishing

Sew the leaf to the apple stalk.

Weave in all ends.
